2008 Buffalo Race Boat Regatta
By Rich & Bill DeGlopper

The skies were cloudy, but the spirits were high as we kicked off the 31st Boat Show on Friday, September 5th with a gala reception and re-launching of the Lockpat II.

All of us have our own family lineage. So does the classic Lockpat II. It is a 1931 Hacker, powered by a Packard V-12 engine. Hundreds of hours of work and creative genius provided by an ace staff of old boat lovers allowed this hull to return to it’s former glory. The restoration timetable went right down to the wire. Travelers on the route from Detroit to Buffalo witnessed Trevor Morin sitting in the cockpit feverishly reinstalling the dash & upholstery as the trailer & hauler sped down the highway. Nevertheless the extra effort was a success as the boat arrived at the historic Buffalo Launch Club basin in time for the Friday night re christening party.

Show participants met on the docks to share the story of this unique boats’ restoration with current owner, Tom Mittler, boat restorers, Doug and Trevor Morin, engine restorers, Danny Acenero, and Gene Bianca. The previous owner, David Stevens, and Mary Northcut, granddaughter of the original owner, Dick Locke were also present to witness the re-launching of this magnificent Hacker Craft. This reception was shared with over 500 guests and dignitaries.

Located in the dining room of the Buffalo Launch Club was a historical display of the Lockpat II and another feature race boat, the Curtis Wilgold . Stan Fitts, of the APBA Historical Society, sent along artifacts highlighting the history of the racer Curtis Wilgold.

The new replica Curtis Wilgold was present, entered by Mark Mason of NH. Local museum owner Jim Sandora displayed the Conners trophies, depicting the rich racing history during the early years of the Buffalo Launch Club.

Events for the 31st annual Raceboat Reunion began with a series of seminar speakers who made presentations in the Launch Club ballroom. Later, the famed Pit Pass party was held for participants and friends, highlighted by a new format.

On this occasion the rechristening ceremony of the Lockpat II was the feature of the night. It was set up and re-enacted just as the boat christening events were done years ago.

This Friday evening reception set the tone for the weekend. A big band orchestra played under the stars before an enthusiastic and appreciative audience.

An ice sculpture of the Lockpat II set off the Buffalo themed culinary offerings put on by Jim Henzler and the Buffalo Launch Club staff. Special thanks goes out to Tom Frauenheim for all the time and effort he put into the planning of the Friday night reception. It was a distinct departure from past years & very well received by all in attendance.

In fact, so many dancers filled the outdoor floor, the band even played an extra set. Jay Marshall, who brought his racer Tijuana Taxi all the way from Baton Rouge, La, was a show stopper as he demonstrate dance steps seldom seen by the current generation. Unfortunately, Jay wore a hole in his shoe to match the hole in his boat’s sponson.
